FIREFIGHTERS were called out to tackle a number of small outdoor blazes on Saturday.

Crews from Farnworth had to put out three grass fires in the space of 30 minutes during the afternoon.

The incidents took place in Little Hulton and officers say were caused by a mix of the hot weather and arson.

Mike Wilkinson said one case was deliberate where youngsters had tried to start a fire near a large tree but the cause of the others was unknown.

He added: “None of them were major incidents.

“Luckily we have had a little bit of rain to help calm things down a bit.”

Grass dried out in hot weather is at a higher risk of catching fire.

Members of the public are warned be careful not to leave discarded cigarettes, which can start fires, or debris which can catch fire, out in the open.
