YOUNG and old gathered next to the Fred Dibnah statue in the town centre.

A crowd of around 40 were there, not to remember the famous steeplejack but to catch the rare Pokémon, Lugia.

The statue in Oxford Street is the location of a gym in the smartphone game Pokémon GO.

A recent update means a large number of players must work together at gyms to catch a rare Pokémon, which is unavailable at other points in the game.

Members of the Pokémon GO Bolton Edition Facebook Group co-ordinated to meet in the town centre and were joined by passing Pokémon players.

These events, where large numbers of players are needed, are timed and gamers met for the battle at 6pm on Wednesday.

When playing Pokémon GO, gamers must physically move to different locations.

From the Fred Dibnah statue, players went to the Town Hall, where the clock is also a gym.
