THIS picture may well puzzle people as it did us — although there are plenty of readers who will know exactly where the photograph was taken no doubt.

The location is the road between Belmont Road and Longworth Road in Egerton and the picture was taken in 1954 but we cannot quite place it.

We can see that soil is being moved from the embankment shown in the picture as improvements are being carried out in Egerton.

What fascinated us is that the workmen pictured are not the typical sort of workman you would see today doing road works.

They are wearing flat caps, shirts and jackets rather than the obligatory hard has and steel-capped boots workmen would be wearing today.

Clearly health and safety was not big business back in 1954.
