TWO sporting legends will be back on the pitch to support a father who suffered life-changing injuries in the Manchester terror attack.

Former Bolton Wanderers star Kevin Davies and ex-England cricketer Ronnie Irani are captaining two celebrity teams in a charity T20 cricket match, organised by the friends of Martin Hibbert, who was left paralysed in the attack on Manchester Arena in May, as he left the venue with his daughter.

Mr Hibbert sustained 22 shrapnel wounds. The majority of the metal fragments β€” nuts and bolts β€” entered his back and buttocks, while four fragments hit his right foot, breaking his ankle and tibia.

His horrific injuries included shrapnel going straight through his left bicep, leaving a golf-ball sized hole, and a metal nut hitting his neck, severing his jugular vein and partially rupturing his carotid artery, causing severe blood loss.

The cricket match and family fun day will take place at Edgworth Cricket Club on Sunday, September 3.

Sporting stars taking part also include Jussi Jaaskelainen,Warren Hegg, Mike Watkinson, Jimmy Phillips, Colin Hendry, Gavin McCann, as well as Coronation Street star Colson Smith.

As well as providing practical help for Mr Hibbert and his family, the event is designed to bring people together.

The cricket match has been organised by friends of Mr Hibbert, who was just metres away from the bomb when it detonated.

Friend Matthew Eddleston said: "The main focus of this this event is fundraising but it has also brought people together and demonstrated how much people care for others in their community.

"Martin has said on several occasions how overwhelmed he has been with the amount of support he has received.

"It does help Martin knowing so many people are supporting him. It allows him to focus on his recovery and his family.

"So many people have come out to help. In an ideal world we should never have had to organise something like this, but there has been many positives that have come out of something so devastating."

As well as the T20 cricket match, there is something for children and non-cricket fans.

There will be a real ale tent, barbecue, hog roast, wood fired pizza, gin stall, cocktails, bouncy castle, face painting, stalls, a raffle and live music.

Mr Eddleston said: "We are hoping the weather will stay good for us. As well as the cricket it’s a fun day for all the family."

The match starts at 1pm. Free parking, which will be signposted, is available at the school and in a nearby field.
