DEMOLITION work at a derelict nightclub is expected to begin in November.

The old Late Club, in Bolton town centre, will be torn down amid repeated arson attacks and fears it has become unsafe.

Earlier this year, firefighters warned that the Bank Street building — which is owned by Bolton Council — had become a ‘magnet for youngsters messing around’, following four fires in two months at the site.

The council said in July that some people were ‘intent on breaking in and causing problems’ at the former club, which ceased trading in 2012.

The town hall has now issued notice that it intends to demolish the building, starting on November 27.

According to documents on the council’s planning website, the work is expected to be complete by January 26, 2018.

In September, 2014 a huge cannabis farm was found on the first floor of the building after a large scale police operation.

An estimated 500 plants were discovered with a street value of about £250,000 after the raids.

Firefighters also discovered the remnants of a cannabis farm when they responded to a fire at the club in May this year.

A council spokesman said in July: “We do own this particular building and are doing our best to keep it secure.

“There do seem to be some people intent on breaking in and causing problems.

“However, we are planning to demolish the building in the near future.”

Bank Street is one of the key ‘gateway’ zones that Bolton Council is targeting for major regeneration as part of a £1 billion town centre building masterplan.

Under the plans, 500 new homes are planned for the area known as Church Wharf, which stretches from Bank Street along the River Croal and behind Bolton Parish Church.

The council is hoping to buy up the Diamonds lap-dancing club next door to the Late Club to make way for the housing, but councillors have accused its owners of demanding an unreasonable price.
