PRIMARY school students in Farnworth have created new signs to stop bad parkers.

Children got together to stop people leaving cars on the yellow zigzag lines outside St Peter’s CE School.

The banners focus around children’s safety in the area and build on the school’s other road safety programmes.

Lyra Goodwin, aged 11, had her design selected as the winning banner by a panel of governors.

Lynn Williams, head teacher at St Peter’s, explained that the idea had been put to her by a parent after fears that high levels of traffic and poor parking around the school could be dangerous.

She said: “By engaging the children in this way, we are hoping that the message will get to parents via the children: that pupil safety is a priority, and no matter what other priorities may be on the minds of the parents, children’s safety must come first.”

She also explained that the school had been focusing on children’s safety already by putting in place a ‘walking bus’ project, which allows children to travel from the nearby Tesco car park.

It had also implemented a breakfast club to allow parents to drop children at the school from 8am.

The banners were completed by Bolton printing firm Impression Ltd, which scanned in pupils’ work and reproduced it on a larger scale.
