FIRE crews were called to tackle a grass fire in a farmer's field in Harwood.

The incident took place at around 3.30pm behind Old Holts Farm, off Roading Brook Road.

Flames swept through dead plant-growth and grass, but it is not known how the blaze started.

Crews from Bolton North were on the scene for around 45 minutes, using beaters to bring the fire under control, and stopped the flames from spreading.

A spokesman for GMFRS said: "We used beaters to extinguish the fire — whereby you hit the ground with a stick with a flap on the end, which takes all the oxygen away and starves the fire.

"It was well away from the road so we couldn't get any water to it."
