FORTY lucky Cub Scouts became the first people ever to sleep at the top of Blackpool Tower.

The group of eight to ten-year-olds from the Fifth Tyldesley Cubs had the sleepover last weekend as some children braved the tower’s famous glass floor for the night.

The tower, which is 518 feet and 9 inches tall, underwent a £20m restoration in 2011 including a newly constructed glass floor at 500 feet high which can hold the weight of two elephants.

Cub leader David Simpson said: “They were all buzzing and they were all arguing over who could sleep on the glass floor. Everyone was really excited.”

David said that the trip was very popular with the children, many of whom wanted to pitch up on the infamous ‘walk of faith’ which first opened 20 years ago.

The sleepover was run by Youth Fundays, a group of volunteers from Leicestershire Scouts, in partnership with Merlin, the company which operates the tower, as well as Alton Towers and Sea Life.

Two years ago, the Tyldesley Cubs had a sleepover with Youth Fundays at Blackpool Tower Circus and went up the tower in the morning when the organisers mentioned the possibility of sleeping at the top.

David said Youth Fundays, which also organised a Cubs' outing to the National Space Centre in Leicester, is really well run.

He said: “They’re all really good. They work really hard to make sure that everyone is okay.”

The Cub leader said that the Tyldesley group would love to return for a sleepover at the top of the tower in the future.

David said: “It’s not every day you get to sleep on the glass at Blackpool Tower.”
