TK Maxx shop move 'good for Bolton'

Would you rather shop in the town centre or at retail parks? Tell Us in the Comment box below

THE decision of a popular chain store to leave Crompton Place is good news for Bolton, says council leader Cliff Morris.

TK Maxx has announced it will leave its first floor site in the shopping centre in favour of a bigger site on the edge of the town centre.

The cut-price chain said its new shop, near Sainsbury's in Trinity Street, would be "a more prime location" and allow it to stock a greater range of goods.

Cllr Morris, who chairs the Town Centre Leadership Board, said the move was not a snub for the town centre and that the relocated store would create more jobs.

"I would say that the retail park is still within the town centre," he said. "I'm pleased that they are staying in the town and creating more jobs.

"I'm hoping we can attract someone else to Crompton Place. If the shop is not big enough for them, I'm glad they want to expand in Bolton."

The new site will give TK Maxx an extra 10,000 square feet of floor space and 20 more jobs will be created.

Cllr Akhtar Zaman, the council's executive member for regeneration, said: "Bolton town centre is expanding.

"If TK Maxx is moving to Trinity Street, where there are car parking facilities, that area is flourishing. I think it will be good for the consumer. People will want to go there."

Cllr Zaman said he did not know whether any businesses were lined up to move into TK Maxx's present home in Crompton Place.

Crompton Place manager Malcolm Angus was unavailable for comment.

Pity Crompton Place is locked up at night the old shop could of been converted into unoccupied apartments with perpetual to-let signs outside.

Any store that calls itself "Maxx" deserves to be run out of town.

If the council sacked maybe 25% of its staff and freed up the resulting space for micro-businesses, would that be good news for Bolton too?

Proof again that adding that floor to The Wingates was a complete waste of money.

Yes, it's never going to work as a shop, there's simply no passing trade. Perhaps it should just be offices.

this empty space, would make a good coffe shop with the other 4, bolton, centres a joke the councils, a bigger one, repuation for parking keeps, most people away, and the pensioners, are not safe from theiving scum, need cutbacks in the townhall, and clean this town, starting with the railway station.

This is a very sensible suggestion. Create offices above the shops and then you always have a certain amount of passing trade. It's a model that's used in many other countries but seldom in the UK.

'people will want to go there' well i don't. i have visited the shops there twice, as i hate having to cross all those roads and walk through car parks to get to the tiny little shops. that's another shop i will no longer be using. we don't all have cars.

Once again the dopes at the council proove they have not idea, bailing out of the town centre cant be good in anyones eyes....

Bolton Council its because of the parking and the way you enforce it, simple relax parking let the people in, this isnt rocket science is it.

i think its a great idea, though do agree about the parking problems for other shops in town.Bolton needs more good shops and bars in the centre its behind the times thats why it attracts scum.
