APPRENTICE hopeful Alex Wotherspoon found himself on the losing side last night as the two teams on the BBC reality show competed for glory in a greetings card task.

Alex, a 24-year-old regional sales manager from Rosewood in Westhoughton, was unusually quiet throughout the task as his team, Renaissance, failed to impress with their idea to base their card on an environmental theme.

Early in the task Alex recited a poem for inclusion in one of the cards.

But the team's project manager, 24-year-old bank manager Kevin Shaw, was fired by tycoon Sir Alan Sugar for failing to lead the group adequately.

He lampooned the group for coming up with a poor idea, saying that people did not to be preached to.

The team also failed to impress the companies Clinton Cards and Celebrations who refused to buy even one card from them after Shaw's shoddy pitches.

The decision to fire Shaw led to all the contestants clashing in the house after the task.

Following his departure from the show Shaw said: "I was the right one to go.

"If you're running a company, when the business goes under so does the manager for the company.

"My team lost so surely I must take responsibility for the task."

Asked what went wrong, Shaw said: "The whole task was a disaster. The idea and the pitches were awful."

Shaw said he would like one of the men to win as he built a "natural bond" with them and added he was taking some time out to consider his future options.

This years teams must be the worst ever. No one has any charisma. The only time we here Alex speak is when he is complaining. Whoever Alan Sugar ends up with he will have his work cut out

Wow! watch out China. How can Britain fail to become the engine of the world economy, when we have thrusters like this pushing back the boundries of greeting card technology.

Why don't they try to invent something useful, like a TV which automatically switches channels when a crappy reality show comes on.

jenny I think she's called, said to a leading card retailer that she really thinks she should cut down on sending cards for environmental reasons - but would they like to buy a few thousand or so for their shop.... mmmmmmmmmmm!
