PUPILS can take a trip down memory lane with the help of The Bolton News' new schools resource pack.

"Looking Back at Bolton" is designed to bring the past and future together.

Teachers say they have struggled to find images and information to illustrate lessons on local history.

Our new resource pack covers all aspects of Bolton life, including work and play from the late 19th century to the present day.

Our research suggests that it is the first time a newspaper has made use of its archives to benefit local schools.

Members of the senior management team from a number of primary and secondary schools backed the idea and provided valuable feedback into what the study packs should contain to ensure they were a valuable tool in lessons.

The Bolton News' librarians are frequently called upon to provide information and pictures to complement the study of history.

Editor-in-Chief of The Bolton News, Ian Savage, said: "The Bolton News has long been a valuable part of the community.

"Since the newspaper was first published in 1867, it has played an active part in the lives of many generations of Boltonians.

"And now we hope to be able to bring the past and future together in this resource pack.

"The Bolton News has extensive photographic archives going back to the 19th century.

"Using these archives, we have developed an exciting schools resource pack - Looking Back at Bolton' - which shows our local history in all its glory on a CD Rom."

Topics covered include Bolton at War, Bolton at Leisure and Bolton at Work, as well as transport, childhood, "then and now", leisure and education.

More than 160 photographs are included on the CD-Rom.

Mr Savage said: "We have liaised with teachers to make sure our CD Rom meets the requirements of the school curriculum and that we have presented it in an easy-to-follow format which is also fun."

So far The Bolton News has received more than 20 orders for the pack.

St Brendan's RC in Harwood was the first school to order the pack.

Headteacher Anne Thornton said: "It is so important that pupils know about the past and the heritage of the town. Bolton's history is fascinating.

"The beauty of this pack is that it contains so much about local history and we don't have to go to different websites and books to try and find out the information."

She added: "The price is very reasonable and this pack can be used cross-curricular and for all ages."

Pupils say they are excited at being able to use the pack.

Niamh Hunter, aged nine, sadie: "History is really interesting, from finding about where you live to world history."

Joshua Kerrigan, aged nine, said: "I am looking forward to finding out what children did in Bolton before television and computer games. That will be really interesting."

Will Gallie, aged nine, added: "I can't wait to see all the pictures on the CD because it will really bring the past alive."

For a limited time only, The Bolton News is selling the pack to local schools for just £29.99 rather than the usual price of £49.99.
