Top writer's tips

MEDIA, writing and production students at the University of Bolton found themselves being taught by one of the best in the field.

Acclaimed writer Ronan Bennett, the man behind BBC's 10 Days to War which was shown recently, spoke to the students about his experiences of writing for television and the cinema.

His latest work, for the big screen, is in pre-production. It is being directed by Michael Mann with Hollywood star Johnny Depp in the the lead role.

The film, called Public Enemies, will also star La Vie en Rose Oscar winner Marion Cottilard.

Ronan said: "I was impressed with the Bolton students, with their enthusiasm and seriousness. I was also impressed by some of their original ideas for films and television drama.

"This all bodes well for them in the future. "Students have to remember, though, that producers will not come looking for writers and directors they haven't heard of.

"It's essential the students prepare their calling cards - the scripts or short films they will use to persuade producers to give them that essential first commission. I have no doubt, having spent time with the Bolton students, that the best of them are talented enough to become screenwriters and directors.

"What they have to do now is get out and meet producers and broadcasters and show what they can do."

Shame he couldn't find the time to run a couple of crash courses for the pseudonymous "Staff Reporters" that disgrace these pages from time to time....
