Bid for £500m schools funding

A £500million bid to rebuild or refurbish every high school in Bolton is being prepared.

The borough's education leaders have teamed up with Blackburn and Darwen Council to submit plans to the Government.

Bolton Council hopes the bid to the Building Schools for the Future programme will lead to 17 secondaries being transformed, with work starting as early as 2012.

Cllr Linda Thomas, Bolton's executive member for children's services, said: "The programme will transform education for young people in Bolton, ensuring the development or rebuilding of every school in the borough.

"The new and improved buildings, facilities and technology will have an enormous impact on the life chances of every child for decades to come."

Withins and Hayward Schools, which are to become academy schools and so will receive private funding, will not qualify for Government cash.

Bolton and Blackburn will work together on the next stage of the process after agreeing to form a Local Education Partnership, allowing them to bring in a private sector developer and ICT provider.

Through Building Schools for the Future, the Government is ploughing billions of pounds in both public and private finance into the development and maintenance of school buildings.

Let us analyse this statement, leaving aside the Labour Party's desperation. If a bid is being made for money for every school then either some of that money will be wasted or every school is currently deficient. I fell sorry for Bolton School. It has not got the government and the Town Hall to tell it what it needs and the poor old school has to run itself. That's why Bolton School does so badly compared with all the wonderful secondary schools in Bolton that have the advantage of the Labour Party to tell them what to do.

"Withins and Hayward Schools, which are to become academy schools and so will receive private funding, will not qualify for Government cash."
The staff at Withins do NOT want to become part of an academy that is why they are striking this week. This money could be used to improve the school rather than selling it off! Bolton Council are stupid.

I'm all in favour of £500 million being spent on school buildings but Councillor Thomas is deluded to think that "the programme will transform education in Bolton".
It will tranform the buildings, transforming education means a complete rethink on teaching methods, discipline and less meddling by local authorities and government.
By the way your boss Councillor Morris in the same newspaper says the amount is only £250 million. Which is it? You can tell us the real figure now, the election is over!
