Bolton anti-drink campaigners in charity skydive

Andrea Spencer, Danielle Clay and Emma Gregson, at the front, will jump from a plane flying at a height of 15,000 ft later this month

THREE women will jump from a plane, 15,000 ft high in the sky, to raise money for a school's alcohol awareness work.

Andrea Spencer, Emma Gregson and Danielle Clay are taking part in a skydive to help raise cash for work targeting teenage pupils.

The three woman believe more needs to be done to educate youngsters about the dangers of drinking.

Mrs Spencer, aged 40, who used to a care for an alcoholic, has joined forces with Miss Gregson, aged 31, a recovering alcoholic, and Miss Clay, aged 32, who is a teacher at Rivington and Blackrod High School, where the proceeds from their jump will be used.

Mrs Spencer, of Crown Lane, Horwich, is a mother-of-four who works in the Here to Please You off-licence and convenience store, in Manchester Road, Westhoughton.

She said: "The problems that stem from young people drinking are frightening. It is hard to get the message across to them about the dangers of drinking and they need more education on it."

Miss Gregson, of Vale Avenue, Horwich, was an alcoholic for more than a decade but has been "dry" for nearly three years.

She also has four children and said: "I'm back on track and I just want to put something back into society to help other people.

"If we can educate young people then, hopefully, they won't go down the same route as me. I started drinking at 15, which is a vulnerable age."

Ms Clay, who lives in Horwich, is a teacher at Rivington and Blackrod High School.

She said: "Because of Andrea and Emma's past experiences, and because I work with young people, I would like to see more done to educate youngsters about the dangers of alcohol."

The fundraising jump takes place on May 24. The three woman will free fall for 60 seconds before releasing their parachutes.

Money will be used for educational work at Rivington and Blackrod High School.

A statement from the school said: "The funding raised is going to provide alcohol awareness sessions for young people. This will reinforce the messages of sensible and safe drinking, health awareness and the affects and consequences of drunkenness."

Any leftover money will go towards youth club work for Horwich. If all goes well with the skydive, the women plan to do more fundraising events for future projects.

Anyone wishing to sponsor them should contact Mrs Spencer on 01942 811227 or Rivington and Blackrod School on 01204 333366.
