Top marks for university courses

THE University of Bolton's building studies course has been ranked the best in the country.

According to the National Student Survey, which draws on feedback from final-year students, the course was the best of its kind.

Meanwhile, the institution's mechanical engineering course was also rated in the top three, analysis of the survey in national newspapers revealed.

Both departments are part of the School of Built Environment and Engineering.

School director Alan Cornthwaite said the success was as a result of student support and guidance, small teaching groups and resources.

"Students like to be taught in smaller groups," he said.

"In other universities, students can find themselves in lecture theatres with 200 or more other students. We have also invested in new equipment this year - for both engineering and building-related studies students."

The School of Built Environment and Engineering has 1,400 students based at the university's Deane Campus, of which 450 are on engineering courses.

Engineering students moved into new state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in the University of Bolton's £1.7 million Innovation Factory this year.

Mr Cornthwaite said: "To discover our students value us so highly is extremely pleasing."

This article is highly misleading. Have a look at the subject tables on "The Good University Guide 2008" website.

There are also subject tables on the

I'm all for Bolton having a University - but what we have is a glorified college. Any qualification from this establishment holds no value.

On what grounds do you make this comment? I alongside family and friends have graduated from the University of Bolton and all competed against graduates from other North West Universities to be accepted on graduate schemes with successful IT companies. The value of the education should be assessed on the skills and knowledge gained.

I make this statement because I have spent a lot of time in and around university education. And having done so, I hear most people scoff at Bolton 'University'.

There is no credibility because:

1) In the main, the courses taught there are what I would call 'namby pamby' or 'wishy washy'

2) You need very little in the way of qualifications before enrolling

3) It is seen as a Uni. No actually, a college 'of last resort'

4) It is only in existence because of this government's mis-advised plan to see a majority of people come out of education at aged 21. If a degree was still elitist, Bolton 'Uni' would not exist.

5) I have worked with former Bolton 'University' graduates, and some are so thick I find it laughable.

6) If you want to go to Uni, get a place in a proper red-brick. I recommend Leeds or Sheffield.

7) Bolton 'University' and its 'graduates' are an embarrasment to our town. Anyone who disagrees has never been educated to a good standard elsewhere.

The students, The University of Bolton says...

We are students who are currently studying at Bolton University. To be truthful we are totally offended at many of the above comments. We have perfectly good A levels (I myself got B's) and we came to Bolton due to our courses. They have the best combinations we could find and we're extremely happy with what we're taught. Along with this the tutors are brilliant. We are in no way "thick" and this University was definitely not our last resort. We admit some of the students here are not as well educated as the others, however, this University gives a chance to everyone. This University admittedly has a low ranking because of it's acceptance rate. The student satisfaction rate is 70+% There are also a great majority of international students. I can assure you that me and my friends are confident that we will succeed after this University. Our degrees will count and we will have excellent careers.

Quote: 'In the main, the courses taught there are what I would call 'namby pamby' or 'wishy washy''

Note that most courses in any institution are 'wishy washy' and 'namby pamby'. Lecturers cannot teach you all they know they are there to give you grasps on subjects and allow you to carryout further research at your own will.

Quote '2) You need very little in the way of qualifications before enrolling'

I'll agree with this but it depends on the course and the subscription Id much rather think.

Quote '3) It is seen as a Uni. No actually, a college 'of last resort''

I'm sorry but is there a point to this comment? This is obviously an opinion of your choice of uni and to be frank everyone has somewhere where they would rather not go - mine is Hull but that is honestly my opinion.

I've got two good graded degrees one from Bangor and one from Bolton so I consider myself with experience in 'both' types of your institutions. So you think I'm going to disregard my degree from Bolton off my CV simply because its a 'last resort' - I think not! What about considering the fact that against all odds of drop out rates I have managed to complete degree?

'5) I have worked with former Bolton 'University' graduates, and some are so thick I find it laughable.'

Note 'some' does not mean 'all', and then again not all can afford to go to a red brick uni like ourselves.
