Swimming pool back on track

BOLTON'S multi-million pound swimming pool plan is back on track after health, education and council chiefs thrashed out a deal.

The £10.6 million project, which will also include a health centre, had been in jeopardy after a breakdown in the relationship between town hall and Uni chiefs.

But at a crunch meeting, an agreement was reached by all parties which will see the pool complex built on land at the university.

Based at the Deane Road campus it will include a sports hall with sports science laboratories, a 25-metre, eight lane, swimming pool and an urgent care and diagnostic centre.

Cllr Cliff Morris, leader of Bolton Council, said: "The Deane Road campus has always been the preferred site and I am delighted with the decision. It will provide an excellent facility for members of the public and students and is a significant element of the Bolton Innovation Zone, which will contribute to the £1 billion regeneration of the town centre."

Plans for the centre hit a stumbling block at the end of last year when Bolton Council pulled out of the scheme, saying the university had failed to commit to the project.Together with the Primary Care Trust, the council began to look for alternative sites.

But the university is back on board after its Board of Governors agreed to breath new life into its deal with the Council.

Dr George Holmes, vice chancellor of the university, said: "I'm delighted the Governors have agreed to this exciting new development. We have always recognised the benefits of the proposal to Bolton, of which our community of more than 10,000 staff and students are a key part.

"Our primary concern has been that this development meets the health, leisure and academic aspirations of the university and the town. It benefits our students and recognises the importance of the university's town centre expansion plans to the entire Bolton community. We look forward to the development being planned and built."

As part of the project, students from the university will be able to work alongside health professionals in the centre.

The health centre is part of plans to revolutionise health care in Bolton, which is currently the subject of a huge public consultation.

Tim Evans, chief executive of Bolton PCT, said: "This is great news for Bolton. The PCT is reaching the end of its consultation with Bolton people and, subject to their approval, this development will allow us to hit the ground running in building a new urgent care and diagnostic centre in Bolton."

I am one of those who will be footing the bill for this project. Like the Waterplace, I predict that it will all end in tears. Bolton Labour party should first try something easier like organising a booze-up in a brewery. And,before spending more of our money please can we have the referendum we were promised on the EU. Otherwise, it's goodbye Ms Ruth Kelly and goodbye Labour.

Fabulous news, at last a proper town centre pool is planned. Look forward to its completion.

Go back into your hole and moan to someone who cares. You're probably just another person who would probably find an excuse to moan at world peace if it involved 'footing the bill'.

Obviously, I for one am glad this project is finally back in the swing of things. Bolton has been desperate for a public pool ever since health and safety at the waterplace went buns up.

I don't think this is going to be as successful as you hope for.

It actually puts me OFF being located at the university.

IF you knocked one of those old buildings down near the BMW garage or put it in the valley or even on the top of Bridge street next to the texaco garage. I would have said it was a better place.

The University will just be like another school pool that people use.

How many casinos does a town need.

The old Sainburys site was ideal.

Well so how long will this pool last, possbly 7 years like the other one and than it will be out of date because the money will not be pumped in to modernise it.

Just remember it is a pool and not a fun pool.

Bury is not a fun pool or horwich and these seem to last longer as the novelty will not wear off. I for one will be there every weekend as I do not have time to fit bury or horwich into my schedule at the moment

I don't know about Bury, but Horwich held events every Sunday in the pool, consisting of a large inflatable assault course. For a while in my youth, I used to love going there when that was on.

Maybe they should consider something like this for the new pool?

Haha yeah I know. I really miss that thing. I don't know about anyone else, but that thing was a complete beast. I think i only ever saw one person complete it and that was when they pegged it across.
