NURSES have voted overwhelmingly in favour of bringing the cleaning of NHS wards back in-house rather than leaving it to private firms.
Staff at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) conference in Bournemouth said they believed in-house firms did a better job.
About 40 per cent of NHS cleaning services are out-sourced to private companies.

May McCreaddie, from Glasgow, proposed a motion calling on the RCN Council to lobby the Government to halt contract cleaning.
Reader Poll Do you think hospitals should take on cleaning duties again?
Yes 98.4%
No 1.6%
She told the conference: "There has been an increase in hospital infections and a decline in cleanliness. It's quite simple. We know what works, we have been there, we have had them. They are called ward domestics."
The motion, which was overwhelmingly passed by 98.88 per cent to 1.12 per cent, demands that the RCN Council lobbies the Government to end contract cleaning in the NHS.
MRSA cases in England rose by 0.6 per cent between October and December, 2007, to 1,087.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said: "There is no evidence of a difference in quality or in infection rates between hospitals that have in-house or out-sourced cleaning."

WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE FAULT OF THE CLEANERS THAT THERE ARE SO MANY INFECTIONS, IF YOU WAS TO WATCH ON A DAILY BASIS WHAT THE NURSING STAFF DO AND ALSO WATCH THE CLEANERS THEN MAYBE PEOPLE WOULD SEE THAT CLEANERS ARE NOT SOLELY TO BLAME,NURSING STAFF GO IN AND OUT OF INFECTION ROOMS NOT WEARING PROTECTIVE CLOTHING, DOMESTICS DO NOT, NURSING STAFF GO TO WORK AND GO HOME IN THERE UNIFORMS, DOMESTICS DO NOT, NURSING STAFF ARE SOMETIMES WALKING FROM WARD TO WARD FOR DIFFERENT REASONS, DOMESTICS DO NOT.STOP BLAMING THE CLEANERS AND LOOK FURTHER A FIELD.EVEN THE PATIENTS THEMSELVES ARE WANDERING ALL OVER THE HOSPITAL, I HAVE EVEN SEEN THEM GOING TO THE RESTAURANT IF THEY DONT LIKE WHATS ON THE MENU.IN HOUSE CLEANING WOULD NOT STOP INFECTIONS.ITS UP TO EVERONE WHO WALKS THROUGH THE HOSPITAL DOORS TO BE AWARE OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING, MAKING SURE THEY ARE WASHING THERE HANDS,NOT SITTING ON PATIENTS BEDS,AND NOT WALKING ALL OVER THE HOSPITAL WITH PATIENTS.ADMITEDLY IT IS NOT EVERYONE BUT IT ONLY TAKES ONE PERSON TO BREACH THE CLEANLINESS RULES.

I just spend a week in Preston Hospital and the cleaners on my ward where exceptional. The nurses and doctors the opposite. The nurses however where so overworked they did not have time time wash their hands often enough.. that is where the problem lies that and a break down in caring in general. What a sad refelction on what used to be.

And where are they supposed to change? In the toilets??
They even have to share lockers; if they are lucky enough to get one that hasn't been broken into.

People these days rely on antibiotics too much thus their immune systems are suppressed to such a degree that when poorly in hospital they pick up any infection going. Some Doctors dish out antibiotics like sweeties instead of allowing minor infections to run their course.
I do agree that the standard of hygiene in our hospitals is appalling, I have seen staff in greens and uniforms in the restaurant every time I have been in. The standard of cleanliness on the wards and in public places is poor. A shake up in all departments from our own GPs to ALL staff at the hospital is needed if we are to feel safe and confident at a time when we are at our most vunerable.
