CROWDS of fascinated youngsters, mainly boys, were attracted to the Oxford Street store of Greater Lancastria Co-operative Society in 1979 when Captain Robert Carney brought his airport display to town.
The Bolton Evening News introduction to the story read: "The high-pitched whine mounts to a crescendo as the big jet from Canada drops out of the clouds towards the huge airport. Seconds later the pilot makes a velvet smooth landing ... in the heart of Bolton. Soon another skyliner thunders down the runway and takes off for Australia."
This Canadian gentleman was touring the country with his "working" airport model, complete with hundreds of aircraft, vehicles and trains.
The Easter attraction looks to have worked judging from the crowd we can see here.
