A CENTRE for youngsters has won national recognition for its work to improve the local community.
Tonge Children’s Centre in Tonge Moor has received the Congregational Community Project Award 2008.
It recognises work to create new facilities for the area, including a place of worship, health services and childcare.
The award and prize money of £3,000 were collected by John Evans, the centre’s church leader, and Pat Oliver, community minister.
Mr Evans said: “We are delighted to have won this award, which is reward and acknowledgment of the hard work by people from the church, the council and the community. We will use the award to train young people about basic food hygiene, which will enable them to assist in our community cafe, also it will help fund community events such as fun days and school projects.”
The centre in Starkie Road has a place of worship, The Church at the Centre and a cafe, and supports a team including Early Years staff, a community minister, midwives, nursery staff and health workers.
It has been open since May, 2006.
The annual Congregational awards are now in their tenth year.
