SUPER green pupils and staff at a Bolton primary school have helped it become the borough's most eco-friendly primary school.
Thinking about the environment is part of daily life at St Mary’s RC Primary in Victoria Road, Horwich.
Children are responsible for turning off lights and computers and they monitor gas, electricity and water use so well that consumption at the school has gone down.
“Even the reception children join in by bringing their leftover fruit to be composted,” said the school’s eco co-ordinator, Anne Davies.
Over the past few years, the school has also worked with the Wildlife Trust to improve the area around the building.
Their efforts were rewarded recently when St Mary’s became the first school in Bolton to be awarded a second green flag by Keep Britain Tidy.
Pupils at the school have a big say in the environmental projects undertaken at the school and representatives on their eco committee decided recently to commission artist Eliot Baron to create a musical instrument out of recycled materials to celebrate receiving the second green flag.
He came up with an version of a chime bar made out of recycled wood.
The eco instrument was officially unveiled at the school’s annual Green Day when pupils were encouraged to wear green clothing and took part in a range of fun activities.
Mrs Davies said: “The children are so enthusiastic and are going home and implementing what they have learned. It really is their enthusiasm which drives it on.”
