COUNCILLORS who were among a group accused of being drunk and abusive at a town-centre pub will today learn the results of an investigation into the alleged behaviour.

A 20-strong party, which included prominent local politicians, drank at The Spinning Mule pub in Nelson Square, Bolton, after enjoying a meal and free wine at the annual mayor-making ceremony last month.

Pub staff allege that one person was so drunk he was sick on the stairs and another was carried into a taxi following a five-hour drinking session.

Staff say they were verbally abused when they refused to serve more alcohol and asked the party to leave.

One member of the group is alleged to have demanded: "Do you know who I am?"

Three councillors - Labour's Nick Peel, Sean Hornby and Tony Connell - were investigated by the Labour group leader, Cllr Cliff Morris Cllr Connell was later cleared of any blame.

Cllr Morris, has been reviewing pub CCTV footage from the time of the allegations and has now completed an investigation into the matter. He will reveal his conclusions when he meets Labour colleagues this afternoon.

He said: "I have completed my investigation and shall be discussing my findings with colleagues in the Labour leadership on Monday afternoon.

"It would be wrong to reveal my conclusions before that meeting."

He added: "I am planning to pass all papers on to an independent body to investigate."

Cllr Morris has said he may to refer the matter to the Standards Board which would decide whether there has been a breach of the code of conduct agreed by all councillors.

He told a meeting of Bolton Council on May 23: "The council takes pride in the conduct of members and has always strived to ensure high standards are maintained."
