News that bus passengers will tomorrow be stung by an eighth fare rise in three-and-a-half years has been criticised.

Bus operator First is putting 10p on the cost of all its single journey fares, which previously ranged from £1 to £2.80 depending on distance.

A day ticket rises by 20p to £3.70, while FirstWeek tickets increase by £1, from £13 to £14 and FirstMonth passes go up by £5, from £45 to £50. An annual pass, bought by direct debit, works out at £500.

First's network director for bus operations in Greater Manchester Simon Bennett said the latest price increases were "regrettable but necessary" and blamed them on increased fuel costs, wage inflation and pension costs and the continuing need for investment.

But Cllr Margaret Clare, Bolton Council's representative on the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority says bus firms are making it harder to persuade travellers to leave their cars at home.

"We are trying, on one hand to encourage people on to public transport but we are fighting a losing battle," she said.

"I have a Motability car and would be lost without it but the odd times I have been on the bus it is phenomenally expensive.

"I am not entirely happy with the price rise but the bus services are deregulated and can do virtually what they want."

The last price rise First imposed was in January, 2007, when a FirstDay ticket went up 20p from £3.30 to £3.50, the FirstWeek ticket rose £1, from £12 to £13, and a FirstMonth pass went up £3, from £42 to £45.

Single journey tickets costing £1 remained the same price but the cost of longer journeys rose by up to 20p.

The new fare increases will not affect the elderly, who get free transport, and in the spring lower fares are due to be introduced for school age children, but Cllr Clare says she is worried about the impact the increases will have on the adult working population.

Mr Bennett, from First, defended the new fares stressing that child, concessionary and family tickets had not increased in cost and said other tickets remained competitive.

"We have worked hard to minimise the impact of the realignment," he said.

Visitors to The Bolton News website have reacted with dismay and anger at the price increases and several said they would be resorting to using their cars.

One bus user said: "There is no way I am paying another 10p on top of an already extortionate fare to be crammed into a cattle truck."

"My carbon footprint will only get bigger through no fault of my own," added another.

The company is due to take delivery of 200 new double decker buses before March, 2010.

The double deckers are NOT coming to Bolton!!!!!!

The have already been assigned to Manchester, Oldham and Wigan!!!

The only way Bolton could see a new double decker is if it appears on Route 540 - very unlikely, though!!!!

Bolton, as usual, miss out with regards to Worstbus - the Bolton passengers are paying for buses which will not be used by the people of Bolton.

Oh, btw, did you notice the common reason - fuel increase!!!!! Firtsly they buy their fuel in bulk at a REDUCED rate!! - they can then get tax back from the gvt for the fuel!! In fact the cost of fuel is actually less than this time last year.

Do the Worstgroup management think its customers are fools????

Even Stagecoach and Arriva can have much cheaper bus fares so why does Worstbus have to be the most expensive - they are NOT competitive!!!

Probable fairy-tales yet again from WORSTBUS

Yes it is, but we don't need crumbum aliens like you to tell us so.

No offence meant.

The Gmpta/e and AGMA are not that bothered. they want people to use their cars so that it will strenghten their argument for the MANCHESTER congestion charge. They need the cars on the road to pay off the debt that will follow its introduction.

The improvements to public transport and regulation will not be in place so the time is ripe to drop the idea.

They wont though as they speak with forked tongues.

Its all very well blaming the bus company but the real culprits are the oil companies. soaring fuel costs are bound to affect any business that has to use fuel, or havent you noticed the price rises in the supermarkets lately.
Get real people.

Heywood,

Its obvious you have not read the first post on here.

the information in it is correct. First are not paying the same price as road hauliers or normal motorists

Get off the dole and get a proper job and then you can afford the bus!!

Anyways what happened to the single mother who dropped the gum wrapper on the floor!!!!

Why not use a different bus operator such as Rossendale Transport. They are already cheaper. If they can do it for less why can't Last Bus.
Either that or use a car that costs about 10p per mile.
Even SELNEC was better than these.

What car do you drive les a reliant robin,
10p a mile what about tax insurance repairs tyres this all comes into running a car,
if you work it all out you will find its nearer 50p per mile,

Does Long Lane in Leverhulme Park have a competitor? Does Manchester Road (twds Manchester)? Does Bury Road? Does Bradford Road (???) heading towards the Hospital? Does Stitch-mi-lane, Does Withins???? Does Somerton Road?

Its alright saying use another operator, but what happens if there is no other operator???

If you knew the job you would know this isnt true, Stagecoach had to have a fare increase because of fuel recently, a couple of fares went up 5p, some returns went up slightly but most fares stayed the same. And that was the first rise they had done in a long while, so if thats all thats needed for Stagecoach to cover fuel cost increases, whats First's excuse.

Dont look at this me trying to prove you wrong, you've just been suckered in by Firsts lies!

Lets put it this way...onnexxion in Netherlands, just invested in quite a large number of new buses, extended routes and created new routes - hence more buses, more fuel and more wage costs BUT the fares have actually decreased whilst patronage has increased hence creating more naturally money rather than forcing to its customers to pay more!!!!

Worstbus should be ashamed of themselves and why don't the BN repporters actually question the company and use these examples and lets see how they squirm out the answers!!!!!

I think they should do away with these glass bus shelters!! As soon as one is put up they get smashed and replaced the next day and smashed again. Bring back the metal shelter and the money they save having to replace the glass they can lower bus fares. I dont use buses myself but find it annoying when i see the shelters smashed up all the time.

I caught a bus into Bolton about 5 years ago. It cost a fortune for a two mile journey. It was cheaper to go in a car so it certainly will be now. One thing I did notice that there was only me out of 20+ passengers who had paid full fare. The rest of the people were pensioners, children etc If it was affordable I would actually use public transport - I love using it elsewhere in Europe. In Munich for example the public transport was superb. We are decades behind in this country.

Well I caught the bus this morning and the bus driver was trying to justify the price increase to the passengers as the boarded the bus.
"The papers got it wrong it isn't for an increase in our wages, we haven't had a pay risde in two years"
What I can't understand is the kids are getting a reduction in the bus fares in the spring, but yet they take up the same amount of space(if not more) than a full paying adult. If they can reduce the fares for kids, they can reduce the fares for everyone.

The bus shelters are paid for by the PTE (i.e.e money from the council tax) it would in no way reduce the fares as the PTE does not have a say in bus fares except for concessionary fares (i.e. children and elderly). The bus fares are set by the bus companies themselves and they do not pay for the bus shelters (otherwise the fares would be even higher knowing Worstbus)

I used to work there, and i can confirm that the drivers had a three year pay deal in 2006, not quite the 2 years the driver was saying, but a deal which was organised with money that was already available when the deal was settled in 2006, so why blame wage increases??

I wrote to my MP last year to explain economic basics, i.e. if the local authority put up prices by inflation busting amounts, then the businesses which rely on those services, i.e. their staff, will demand higher wage rises etc etc etc.. Then we will have out of control inflation. Manchester put 33 percent on parking, 22 percent on trains and now these rises on buses. I demanded a 2500 salary increase this year and got it as the company could see the cost of living in manchester had risen so steeply. But all I got back from Labour was a nice e-mail this christmas saying thanks for contacting us this year. Well forget the christmas greeting's, how about the councils control inflation so that businesses stand a chance of seeing it through 2008.

Local Bloke - as stated above apart from the concessionary fare which is controlled by the PTE local councils DO NOT set the fares on public transport - that is down to the privately owned public transport companies. STOP BLAMING THE COUNCIL - they are not to blame YOU SHOULD BE BLAMING/COMPLAINING TO WORSTBUS (i.e. First Manchester) aand First TPE (one of the local train operating companies that operate through the town).

Dave, Westhoughton - I'm sure a certain PL off another website would love to know how much people are informed as to what the PTE does and does not do as many do still seem as though they are ignorant of the facts!!!)

I have just completed 10 years as a bus driver with first, and can tell you the real reason for fare increases is that the company are a shareholders company, which means every year we have to make more than the year before to keep the shareholders happy! makes yer laugh dont it? a public service bein run by a company that has to make more money every year to keep the shares high
