SKIPS are being placed on the streets of Great Lever as part of a community clean-up aimed at reducing the number of arson attacks.

People will be able to dump household rubbish, bulky items and white goods such as fridges and cookers today between 7.30am and 7.30pm.

Workers from Bolton Council are teaming up with police and fire officers as part of a week-long "Beat Sweep" programme in Great Lever.

Skips will be placed in Hamel Street, Belford Drive, Mancroft Avenue, Nugent Road and Lever Street, near its junction with Tildsley Street.

Station commander Ian Bailey, from Bolton Fire Station, said: "People will be able to get rid of things they might otherwise take to the tip, or which might end up dumped in alleys where people set fire to them. Hopefully this will help to reduce the number of deliberate small fires in the area."
