A CRIME-fighting force of 30 people has been on patrol in a Bolton community.

But they are not all police officers.

Members of the public joined regular bobbies, fire officers and Bolton Council officials for a neighbourhood walk to identify troublespots in Horwich.

Residents, ranging from children to pensioners and wearing high-visibility jackets, pointed out examples of graffiti and vandalism in the Horwich West policing district. Officers said they would remedy the problems.

And the police used the opportunity to show residents areas they had improved upon in recent months, including the trouble-plagued Station Park.

Horwich community beat manager PC Andy Vernon, who organised the walk, said he was delighted at how well Tuesday evening's event went.

He said: "It has been brilliant. We've had a cracking turn out and people have made quite a few positive comments.

"Various grot-spots have been identified and those areas are now going to be looked at.

"I'm sure it will have had a positive impact on the Horwich West community."

Insp Mo Razaq, Bolton West area inspector, added: "This is a new way of thinking. It allows people to speak to us face to face and raise any issues they have with us."

Cllr Stephen Rock, leader of Horwich Town Council, joined the walk along with fellow town councillors. He said: "This has been a really good opportunity for us to show the officers from Bolton Council the problems we've been facing.

"I think it's important for them to see it at first hand."

Similar walks have taken place in Westhoughton, Tonge Fold and Hall i'th' Wood. There are plans to hold more across Bolton in the coming months.

Perhaps if the Police patrolled a bit more they might notice these areas without having to be shown them.
Absolutely bloody disgraceful what this country has come to!

I agree Dave, surely the Police already know where the crime spots of Horwich are...without the help of local adults and children............

How can it be a disgrace when the council and cops are actually listening the locals?! Twisted logic, BoltonDave! Or are you doing a bit of cheap police-bashing? Probably a bit of both. In fact, anything they do will probably be never good enough in your eyes. Must be so hard being perfect...

the local community attended and got a chance of their opinion face to face with the police and council together, if they'd of made decisions without consulting the local community they'd of been slagged off, now they have involved them they are slagged off, all those concerned got off their backsides to at least try to improve where they live, they could of sat on their backsides at a pc screen and just blogged each other and **** everything

The reason they are being 'slagged' off is because local people are having to show the police/council where the problems are, when in hindsight... if they did their jobs correctly (i.e. went on patrol regulary and opened their eyes) they'd know all the trouble spots.

It's nothing but a gimmick to try and reassure people they're listening when all it does is make the community weary and fed up.

I'm pretty sure that they'll have known about these crime hotspots from calls the public have made in the past anyway...

But then again when the Police take upto an hour to respond, what's the point in calling them?

Somthing I missed...

Insp Mo Razaq, Bolton West area inspector, added: "This is a new way of thinking. It allows people to speak to us face to face and raise any issues they have with us."

So are you saying you never listened to people face to face before?

Very good comment from gm, a lot more sensible than Bolton Dave's about another poster,
'Kindly go and find a field to rot in.'
Time he read the T & C's

I remember the days when coppers patrolled their own beat for years and they knew what was happening and who was doing it.
It appears that today they are moved on, too frequently.

Mrfusion you are being generous there 1 hour more like 3 or not at all,
Whats the point of catching them they do sod all when if they do catch them,
Well they do say dont do it again please or send the persistent ones on holiday to get rid of there stress,
Birch the bast---- that will stop them,

don060541 says "they do sod all if they do catch them", that's the other parts of the criminal justice system letting the whole thing down. cops arrest and investigate, thats all. probation send them on holiday, courts give them crap sentences. ultimate responsibility lies with the govt. if they really wanted to stop crime and disorder, they'd fund the system properly!
