Driver ‘confused’by road changes was over limit

A DRIVER'S confusion about changing lanes led to a 12-month driving ban and a £250 fine.

Matthew Riley, aged 25, of Osprey Avenue, Westhoughton, was driving along Chorley New Road in Bolton on April 24 when he indicated to turn, moved into a right-hand lane, then changed his mind and moved left again.

Police saw the manoeuvre and stopped him.

He was found to be slightly over the drink-drive limit.

Riley had been out with friends the night before and returned home late that morning, Bolton Magistrates Court heard.

At 8pm that night he took the car to get some food.

Cameron Akram, defending, said Riley had been out the night before but had not felt drunk.

He said that on the night he was stopped Riley did not know the area well and was confused about a recent change to road markings. He added that Riley had no previous convictions and was a man of good character.

Riley was disqualified for 12 months and ordered to pay a £250 fine with £43 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
