Residents warned to keep homes secure

POLICE are warning residents in Bolton to shut and lock doors and windows to keep burglars at bay this summer.

One-in-three burglaries are down to people leaving doors and windows open, providing easy access for opportunistic thieves, say police.

These types of crimes increase with the onset of warm weather when people leave doors and windows open to keep rooms cool.

People also leave front doors unlocked when they spend time in the garden, making it easy for burglars to sneak in, steal property and escape.

Assistant Chief Constable David Thompson said: "Greater Manchester Police is working hard to deter, disrupt and detain burglars to stop them committing this distressing crime that can leave people feeling frightened in their own homes.

"Reducing burglary is one of our top priorities. Results show that we are making good progress and continuing the downward trend in domestic burglary." He said that over the last year police reduced domestic burglary by 11.1 per cent, with 2,699 fewer victims.

"We are determined to drive it down even further and people can play their part in keeping burglars at bay by simply locking up and keeping them out," he added.

Residents are also urged to keep their valuables out of sight and to store car keys well away from their front doors to curb hook-and-cane style thefts.

They are also encouraged to fit alarms and British Standard deadlocks to external doors.

hows about more foot patrols in and around the areas with the highest incidents of burglaries or is that too much to ask for?
