A GAPING hole appeared in the middle of a busy road yesterday afternoon.

The lower part of Bolton Road in Adlington collapsed leaving a hole measuring around 8ft by 6ft and 4ft deep.

It happened just after 4.15pm.

A fire service spokesman said: "The collapse is probably the result of wet weather washing away loose materials and the sun which has weakened the surface.

"A van was badly damaged when it shunted into the hole. The driver got out and warned other vehicles."

Fire crews cordoned off the road, which remained closed last night, and diversions were in place.
