A GENEROUS stranger paid for a woman's shopping after he saw her struggling to pay.

Enid Grundy witnessed the kind gesture in Sainsbury's, in Bromley Cross, on Monday.

The 78-year-old said she was in the queue waiting for a young woman to pay for her shopping at the till when she noticed the woman struggling to pay.

Enid said: "She was trying to pay with a couple of cards and was becoming very distressed.

"She only looked in her 20s.

"I think they must have asked her if she had any other way of paying, but she didn't.

"And that's when this man in the queue went up to the checkout and offered to pay."

The man, who Mrs Grundy described as in his 50s, gave the woman at the till £10 to cover the cost of her two carrier bags of goods.

Mrs Grundy added: "The young girl was so surprised.

"He asked her 'do you need these things for Christmas?' and she said 'yes'.

"Then he handed the woman on the till the £10 for the girl's things and said to the woman 'have a lovely Christmas'.

"The woman was saying she couldn't take it, but he said 'take it as a Christmas treat'.

"I didn't know the man, but he was lovely.

"I followed him out of the store and said 'I think you are very nice for what you have just done for that young girl'.

And he said 'It is Christmas, what is £10?'

"I just thought 'how lovely'.

"I have never seen anything like that before in my life.

"I didn't get his name but I wanted to see if we could find out who he was, it isn't often you get nice news like this."
