FORMER rugby league boss Steve Simms has tackled a new challenge – pulling pints in the lifestyle hall in Bolton Market.

The 62-year-old Australian and his wife, Anne, have taken ownership of the Great Ale Year Round outlet, launched by Dan and Gina Buck in January.

Mr Simms, who lives in Over Hulton, was the long-serving director of rugby at Salford City Reds until 12 months ago. He initially came to the UK in 1992 as boss of the club which is now Leigh Centurions.

Other coaching posts at Halifax and Featherstone Rovers followed before the move to Salford. He said: “My wife and I thought it could be something we could do together, although we weren’t sure exactly what.

"Someone told me about this business in the market that was up for sale.

“I didn’t know the place existed. So I came down here one day and sat in the corner and watched what was going on.

“I contacted the owners and it went from there. It’s going really well.

“In the first four weeks we’ve put 17 real ales on, as well as lagers, stout and cider. We haven’t done a lot different from the previous owners. The concept is why we bought it.

“The market is great. There is a family atmosphere.

"It also works because this is one of the best food places you will find. It should work because it’s in one place.”

The Bucks opened the stall in January following the £4.5 million refurbishment of the market place.

“We are hoping to continue the excellent work they did,” said Mr Simms.
