THE owner of Olympus Fish and Chip restaurant has vowed his restaurant will bounce back after it received a one-star food hygiene rating.

Tasos Pattichis, who is manager of the restaurant in Great Moor Street, felt the report was an unfair reflection on the performance of his staff and put the score down to the "strict criteria" on hygiene reports.

However, he said he will do his very best to rectify the situation and has promised to retrain all members of staff on health and safety requirements.

A health inspector visited the restaurant on October 15 and gave Olympus a "one" rating on the basis that the restaurant did not meet with some food hygiene requirements, which are set nationally.

Olympus had previously held a maximum five-star rating and displayed this using a Scores on the Doors sticker at the entrance.

It has requested a re-inspection and this will be carried out in due course.

Mr Pattichis, who has been in charge of the restaurant for 26 years, said: “Food agencies have a strict criteria and the expectations on us are greater as a result — this is a good thing.

“But unfortunately, as is the case with a lot of restaurants, we may not be able to meet these expectations every minute of the day.

“I set my standards very high and so my do staff. We were visited at a very busy time of day and, in my opinion, we were treated like school children.

“The inspector was very strict about having drinks on wooden shelves, but I’ve visited many wholesalers and they use wooden shelves to store their drinks.

“I’m very confident we can get a five-star rating in the next report. My team a very good group of people and I’m proud of them.

“I will look closely at what we have to do, give the food agency exactly what they want, and go beyond what they want.”

A council spokesman said: “Bolton Council takes food hygiene very seriously and we work hard to maintain and drive up standards. We work closely with food businesses in Bolton and many do score well on the food hygiene rating system.

“In this case the restaurant did not meet with some food hygiene requirements, which are set nationally. However, we have offered advice on how these can be met and we have received a request for a re-inspection, which will be carried out in due course.”

Keith Davies, Bolton Council’s director of development and regeneration, said: “We know that this is a popular and successful restaurant with a conscientious owner who we are confident will respond to the recommendations and secure a much higher rating on re-inspection.”
