OAKWOOD Distribution has announced the creation of eighty-four new jobs at its distribution centre in Westhoughton.

Bosses say the vacancies must be filled by April 2015.

Oakwood Distribution, a subsidiary of Tesco Holdings plc, was set up in September 2008 to distribute and merchandise entertainment products, such as DVDs, CDs and computer games in Tesco stores nationwide.

Since then, the business has expanded to embrace additional product categories, including books, cosmetics, Tesco Bank, gift cards, pharmacy and hair care.

The positions are to support a new distribution opportunity, tracking and picking of consumer durables, from their arrival in stock to their delivery to the customer.

"Oakwood has nearly 2,000 employees in our head office, distribution centre and merchandising within Tesco stores throughout the UK," said distribution centre manager Andy Vallis. "It's our people that make the difference. We have an excellent reputation for service, so we’re looking for team members who will help us to build on that reputation."

"The role of a warehouse operative is very active and crucial to our distribution operation."

Personnel manager Sally Brady said: "We absolutely depend on our distribution centre colleagues to keep Tesco stores supplied with the right stock at the right time.

"Becoming a warehouse operative opens up career possibilities too— it’s how many of our managers started out. The work’s got to be done fast, accurately and safely – so it’s an exciting challenge and a great place to be, if you love teamwork."

Cllr Christopher Peacock, former Mayor of Westhoughton, is delighted at the news. He said: "I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that so many jobs are being created in the Wingates area. It’s fantastic that Oakwood Distribution is going from strength to strength and this is a great opportunity for local people.’

"Candidates will put people at the heart of everything they do," Ms Brady said. "They must be warm and welcoming with colleagues, able to act quickly to help our customers and be receptive to change. Most of all, candidates must have the drive to exceed expectations."
