WE'VE got a Pound Bakery, a Pound Pub and a Pound World — now we've got a Pound Chippy.

The chippy is the latest addition to Newport Street and says it is offering fresh food as 'cheap as chips'.

As well as the traditional fish, chips, customers can have a three-item takeaway breakfasts such as a bacon and egg barm for £1, or pay a little extra to sit in the restaurant area towards the rear of the shop.

Manager Chaz Rai, aged 43, said: "I'm really happy how it has come together because it's an idea that I thought would really work in the town.

"I've made sure that the products we sell are good value and cooked fresh on the premises. The fish is made to order so it doesn't sit out for a time before it's sold, and we chip the potatoes here as normal. We have Holland's pies too, and soon we're hoping to bring in Carr's pasties.

"Lots of people are amazed and ask how we can get away with selling products like fish and scampi at such a low price but I have a number of outlets across the country and buy in bulk."

The chippy, which is situated where Chip-o-latte used to be, has been re-decorated both outside and in.

Mr Rai said: "I wanted the restaurant part of the chippy to be more ambient and less clinical to make the experience more like having a home cooked meal.

"A lot of people seem to be really interested in it — I've seen lots of people talking on social media and we've been really busy since we opened our doors, so we've obviously hit the nail on the head with the idea. More importantly, people are coming back which is great."

Student and returning customer Gareth Jones, aged 32, from Great Lever, says the shop offers value for money.

He said: "I'm on a course around the corner from the chippy at the moment and every day I've popped in here for my dinner. The portions are not huge but the food tastes really good and it's definite value for money. I know they say you get what you pay for but I can't fault it."

Bolton Council’s Executive Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Resources, Cllr Ebrahim Adia, said: “This premise has been a chip shop for some years now and it is a matter for the landlord to manage the tenancy. Our aim remains to attract a good range of businesses to Bolton and we expect that £3 million investment in Newport Street and the £48 million investment in the transport interchange will support increasing interest from retailers to occupy shops in the town centre including in Newport Street.”
