THE former Subway building in Bradshawgate — which has lain empty for more than four years — will be given a new lease of life as an estate agents.

Bolton firm Miller Metcalfe is set to move in to the building which acts as a gateway to the town for drivers coming into Bolton from the north of the borough.

Miller Metcalfe said the branch would become its flagship store and will open there in spring 2016.

Work started on the branch at the weekend.

John Fletcher, chief executive, said: "We have always been keen to relocate from our existing site. I am pleased that we will be moving into such a prominent location in the city centre.

"The new branch will create a fantastic new space for our team."

The new branch will house the business' sales, lettings and auction departments, which have outgrown their current branch.

Over the next six months, significant interior and exterior refurbishment will take place, with a new eye catching design.

Inside the branch there will be an 18ft media wall displaying new properties, testimonials and other property finding hints and tips.

Keith Davies, Bolton Council's director of development and regeneration, said: "It is one of our gateway sites, and we have been looking to address the issue for some time.

"With the help of The Bolton News we pressured the previous owner to repair the front of the property, as it had fallen into a state of disrepair.

"It has been a problem for some time, and we are very happy that we have been able to support Miller Metcalfe in opening new premises in a great location."

"This is another positive investment into the town centre, and we feel as though our strategy for the town centre is working."

In November 2016, Miller Metcalfe will be celebrating its 125th anniversary.

The business is supporting a number of local charities and is planning a number of events in the run up to the anniversary.

The company’s Giving Back programme continues to support Mummy’s Star, Muscular Dystrophy and Kidneys for Life through numerous events including a recent charity bike ride in which employees cycled 126 miles along the Leeds to Liverpool canal.
