A MEGA meaty offering from a family butcher has been named the UK’s best burger for the second year running at a recent national barbecue competition.

Fraser's Butchers’ Mega Burger was awarded the honour at the Q Guild of Butchers' National BBQ Awards held in Nottingham on Saturday, May 20, beating around 25 other entrants from across the country.

Judges said the burger won out due to its seasoning and its colossal size, which “leant itself to barbecuing perfectly”.

Greg Hull, owner of Fraser's Butchers, said: “We were quietly confident because this is our second time in a row. One time is good luck, but the second time is good planning.

“It was fantastic. It’s good for the team and it is good for the meat industry just to show there are family butchers out there that are surpassing expectations.

“We were up against the best butchers in the country. You have got to be the best in the region just to get to the final.”

Fraser's Butchers won the North West contest before going through to the final.

The burgers were presented fresh to the judges in the morning before they cooked and tasted them.

The winners were announced at a ceremony at Eastwood Hall later that day.

Mr Hull said: “The night was fantastic. We met up with some of the best butchers in the country. I think there must have been something like 100 businesses from all over the country.”

When asked what made the burgers stand out, the 57-year-old said: “I believe it is the mix of quality beef with the seasoning that we have developed over the years. We have used this seasoning for 35 years.

He has owned the business for 29 years and has been in the industry since he was 15 years old.
