A HISTORIC town centre pub is set for a new lease of life when it reopens.

The Brass Cat, in Churchgate, closed in January for a refurbishment and will reopen today, as The Churchgate.

A group of local businessmen bought the pub last year and operated it as The Brass Cat before deciding it was time for a change.

They have spent the past six months modernising the inside of the pub to breathe new life into it, while also preserving the building’s history.

While developing the building, Frank Kirkpatrick, the licensee, said they found stonework dating back to the 14th century and the building is believed to have been an inn or private house going back to the 18th century.

A grand reopening of the pub will be held at noon.

There is a stage for music nights, including Northern Soul events, and a DJ booth.

The pub also has 13 televisions for live sport.

Mr Kirkpatrick said: “The pub is looking to welcome everyone.

“We are trying to mix it up with different things.”

The Churchgate will also be serving food including gourmet burgers and a roast on a Sunday and will be offering a range of cask ales and a gin menu.
