Outlook healthy at refurbished vets

PAMPERED pets are often treated better than some adults, so it is only fitting that they should have luxurious surroundings when they are taken to the vet.

Owners and animals using Regan’s veterinary practice in Blackburn Road now have bright new waiting and examination rooms, following a £25,000 investment in refurbishment.

The surgery was set up, along with nine others, nearly 30 years ago, by well-known Bolton vet Tony Regan, who was bought out by CVS on his retirement in 2006.

CVS Limited was established in August, 1999, to acquire and operate veterinary practices which were well established within their local community and had a reputation for high quality service.

According to the CVS group’s senior vet, Anne Marie Eaton-Evans, the group is gradually rolling out a refurbishment programme for all 10 practices, including the remaining two in Bolton and others in Radcliffe, Bury, Wigan and Manchester.

Mrs Eaton-Evans said: “We have continued using the Regan name because he was well-liked and respected in Bolton, and many of the staff who worked for him are still here.

“We deal with around 125 animals every week here in Blackburn Road and, throughout the group, we look after nearly 100,000 pets every year.

“About 80 per cent of all the animals we see at the surgeries are cats and dogs and we also see children’s pets, like gerbils, hamsters and rabbits and more exotic pets including monkeys and snakes.”

Business manager Kath Gradwell said: “This surgery doesn’t carry out operations but we do at our main practice in Bury Road.

“There are a range of procedures available for pets nowadays, from operations to endoscopy to MRI scans.”

Mrs Eaton-Evans said that pets are now treated as much-loved members of the family and were looked after very well.

One exotic pet making a visit to the surgery was Pepe the skunk with his owner Steph Aspinall, who lives in Walkden.

She got the skunk, who has been de-scented, two years ago and says he makes a great pet.

She said: “He has to have his nails trimmed once a month and he has all the treatments and injections that cats and dogs have.

“I take him out for a walk sometimes on a lead but only in summer.”
