THOUSANDS of school pupils aged 14-19 are expected to attend one of the region’s biggest careers fairs starting tomorrow in Horwich.

Hundreds of organisations, including the army, high-tech missile manufacturers, advanced engineering companies, training providers, colleges, aerospace specialists, automotive companies and environment organisations, will have information stands.

At the Skills North West careers event, being held at Bolton Arena until Thursday, young people will be able to gets hand-on experience in engineering and design projects.

And they will be able to talk to a wide range of advisers from colleges, companies and training organisations, to get the best advice on their future further education and careers.

The three-day event will encourage young people to consider working in a wide range of industries with exhibits and companies showcasing many possible career options. The largest stand will be the ‘Make It in Manufacturing and Engineering’ zone where youngsters will be able to have a go at making things in the hope it will stimulate them to seriously consider a career in industry.

Organisers are hoping to dispel the myth that working in industry or manufacturing means repetitive production line work.

Organiser Nicola Eagleton-Crowther said: “The Government predicts that more than one million people will work in the low carbon economy by 2015 and that the top jobs of the future will be in advanced manufacturing and engineering.

“We want to show teenagers the exciting reality of working in industry and prove that their perceptions of people standing on production lines are about 30 years out of date.”

Make It in Manufacturing is a campaign led by the Manchester-based Manufacturing Institute and its industry partners to encourage the next generation of talent to consider careers in industry.

Skills NorthWest is the region’s largest interactive skills and careers fair for 14-19 year-olds in the region and brings together regional skills sectors, businesses, education establishments and training providers. Many of the North West’s leading employers will be running interactive activities on the stand, including: Aircelle; BAE Systems; Chemicals Northwest; Cogent; Conquest International; Dunbia and Engineering Manufacturing Solutions. Other companies will include: Jaguar Land Rover; MBDA; McBride; Northwest Aerospace Alliance.
