A DISABLED man was caught driving on a motorway while twice over the alcohol limit.

John Seal was in a Motability car on his way home after hearing his wife had to go to hospital for an appointment.

Seal, aged 64, of Blake Gardens, Halliwell, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol.

He was banned from the road for 18 months and fined £150 with £85 costs plus a £60 victim surcharge by district judge Huw Edwards sitting at Blackpool Magistrates Court.

Prosecutor, Claire Harris, said on June 26 at 9.30pm police received a report the driver of a Ford Fiesta on the M55 had been drinking.

They stopped Seal on the motorway near Kirkham, where a breath test showed 71 micrograms of alcohol in his body - 35 is the limit.

Howard Green, defending, said Seal, who had been in the area to visit his son, had drunk a lot the day before.

On the day of the offence he had one drink before midday.

The defendant, who had trouble walking, was driving home when he was stopped.

Seal told the judge that he only usually used the car to visit his son. The day of the offence he got a call to say his wife had to go to hospital.

He added: "I'd rather you direct I don't have a licence again. I don't like driving and will not be doing it again. The car has been returned."
