A DRIVER who was being pursued by police has admitted badly injuring a pedestrian by dangerous driving.

Tekie Yamani suffered serious head injuries after he was hit by a Vauxhall Astra driven by Martyn Jones in Deane Road, Bolton, on July 18.

Jones, aged 39, of Cameron Street, Leigh, appeared at Bolton Crown Court via video link from Forest Bank prison and pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and failing to stop after an accident.

He was told yesterday he faces jail.

The Honorary Recorder of Bolton, Judge Timothy Clayson, adjourned sentencing until September 29 to allow reports to be prepared.

Shirlie Duckworth, prosecuting, told the court that the victim has suffered amnesia following the crash, but would be able to provide a statement giving the court details about the impact the crime has had on him.

Mr Yamani was hit by Jones’ car as it tried to overtake a bus on the pelican crossing near Bankfield Street.

The car, which was being pursued by police, was later found abandoned in Wordsworth Avenue, Leigh.

An air ambulance was called to the scene, along with an ambulance and rapid response vehicle. Mr Yamani was taken to the Salford Royal Infirmary. He is now being treated as an outpatient for his injuries.

Judge Clayson remanded Jones in prison until sentencing.

He said: “Obviously you must expect a custodial sentence for this offence.”
