A PEDESTRIAN was punched and threatened with a metal bar in The Haulgh on Monday night.

The 23-year-old man was jumped by two men in a street robbery in Bromwich Street at about 9.45pm.

His attackers had pulled up alongside him in a silver van and jumped out of their car before robbing him.

The men, who are described as being in their mid-20s, asked the brave victim where he lived but he refused to say.

They stole a mobile phone, a cash card and the victim's bag before running back to the van and driving away.

The man did not receive any medical treatment so it is believed his injuries were not serious.

Police have made no arrests so far and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Both attackers are described as being of mixed race, with one about 5ft 10in tall, of a chubby build with short hair.

The second is 6ft tall, of a broad build and was wearing a black bob hat.

DC Phil Unsworth, from Bolton North neighbourhood policing team, said: “A 23-year-old man was attacked as he was walking in Bromwich Street on Monday night.

“A silver van pulled up and two people got out and robbed him.

“The victim was punched and threatened with a metal bar before the offenders stole some of his belongings and left.

“Anyone in the area on Monday night who might have seen the van should get in touch with us as soon as possible.

“Likewise, if anyone has any information about the incident they think is relevant, I would urge them to give us a call.”

A woman who has lived in Bromwich Street for about 13 years, who asked not to be named, said: “This area has gone downhill.

“It is getting worse and there seems to be little police presence here.

“I would not feel safe walking around at that time — I make sure the kids are safely inside at night time.

“My next door neighbour was burgled recently.”

Another resident, who also asked to remain anonymous, said: “It has always been rough here but there are a few new faces I have spotted recently.

“We have never been bothered but I have seen lads scrapping outside in the middle of the night.”
