PARTYGOERS across Bolton are being warned to steer clear of the wheel this Christmas as Greater Manchester Police clamp down on drink and drug drivers.

The force has launched a None for the Road campaign to warn Christmas revellers that their party selfie could become a mugshot "cellfie" if they're caught driving under the influence.

Greater Manchester has the highest recorded incidence of drink-driving among teenagers that are not even old enough to legally be drinking.

About 319 drivers were arrested by GMP during last year's Christmas operation and 264 were caught during a summer campaign.

Inspector Matt Bailey-Smith, of GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "It's really important that people understand that you don't have to be drunk to be a drink driver. Just a couple of drinks presents a risk and can affect your ability to drive.

"If you're going out the simplest thing to do is to leave your car at home or, if you must drive, have none for the road and take the guess work out of it."

Brake, the charity that lobbies for safer driving, found in their own research that just two per cent of motorists would admit to driving while intoxicated, and 19 per cent admitted to driving in the morning after a night of heavy drinking.

Paul Hill, a litigator at Asons Solicitors with eight years experience of road traffic accident cases, added: "Everyone wants to have a good time at Christmas, but it's important to be aware of what you are drinking and to make sure you never get behind the wheel of a car if you have had any alcohol at all.

"It may not be just your life that you ruin, it could well be the lives of innocent pedestrians or other road users. We want everyone to have a safe, sober and Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year."

Members of the public that are concerned about apparent drink drivers can inform the police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers by ringing 0800 555 111.
