THOUSANDS of revellers will descend on Bolton town centre for Mad Friday — and police say they are ready.

The busiest night of the year for clubs and bars will see scores of police officers deployed.

Boltonians celebrating breaking up from work for Christmas are encouraged to enjoy themselves, but to do so responsibly.

Last year 11 people were arrested in the town centre on Mad Friday — the last Friday before Christmas.

Regular Friday and Saturday night patrols will be bolstered by officers from the Tactical Aid Unit and mounted police.

Ch Insp Mark Bell, who oversees Bolton's night-time economy, said: "We are ready and there will be a significant police presence across the borough on Friday night, ready to deal with any incidents in the appropriate manner

"People need to ensure they have a method of travelling home, to drink responsibly, and adhere to the dress codes and rules of each venue.

"Everyone must be careful with their valuables as we have had a slight increase in thefts from persons recently.

"Above all, though, make sure you enjoy the night safely."

Ch Insp Bell set up a night-time economy group of licensees 12 months ago and says it has had a sizeable impact.

Bar and club owners have co-operated to deter binge drinking and prevent troublemakers from sneaking into other venues after being thrown out of one.

Police flooded the streets last Mad Friday, deploying up to 50 officers, but said the town was well-behaved despite making 11 arrests.

Among the arrests was a bouncer suspected of attacking a punter, drug users and revellers being disorderly.

Bolton Street Angels will also be present in the town centre on Friday to provide help to revellers who have become separated from their friends or who have had too much to drink.
