A MOTORIST deliberately drove his car towards another man after the pair had argued in the street, a court heard.

A jury at Bolton Crown Court was told that there was bad feeling between 34-year-old Stephen Mann and his alleged victim, Matthew Williams, after a relationship between Mann’s brother and Mr Williams’ sister went sour.

Mann confronted Mr Williams in Mobberley Road, Breightmet, on the evening of September 3, 2013, getting out of his car before the pair exchanged insults.

Mr Williams, who admitted he had previous criminal convictions for threatening behaviour and being drunk and disorderly, told the court how Mann suddenly stopped his Ford Fiesta and got out, walking towards him and his cousin.

Mr Williams, who accepted that he was 'up for a fight', said: "He said he was going sort me and my family out.”

But Mann then headed back to his vehicle and drove off.

But just one minute later Mr Williams said he was crossing the road and heard a car revving and wheel spinning behind him.

He added: “I tried to jump out of the way as he was coming, but he clipped my ankle and threw me onto the windscreen.”

Geoff Whelan, prosecuting, told the court how Mr Williams suffered a badly gashed left leg which needed hospital treatment after the car hit him at between 15mph and 20mph.

But Mr Williams was so angry that he grabbed a scaffolding pole from a nearby building site and was searching the area for Mann when he was picked up by police.

Officers took him to hospital where his wound needed 13 stitches.

Mann, of Stanworth Avenue, Breightmet, denies causing grievous bodily harm with intent, unlawful wounding and dangerous driving.

The jury of eight women and four men was told that Mann claims he had been on the pavement talking to a friend when Mr Williams or his cousin threw a brick at his car, smashing the windscreen.

He alleges that Mr Williams then jumped onto the bonnet of the car and kicked at the windscreen.

The trial continues.
