A FOOTBALL supporter from Bolton was arrested for directing offensive comments at a female Muslim train passenger.
It is alleged the 47-year-old Leeds United fan made a derogatory remark about her traditional dress.
He was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence after being removed from a train at Stoke-on-Trent Station by officers from the British Transport Police.
The man had been travelling among a number of Leeds United fans drinking aboard on the 6.20pm Virgin Trains service between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly stations.
He was interviewed and given police bail until October 28.
Inspector Michelle Wedderburn said: "Anyone who finds themselves in an intimidating or frightening situation because of the behaviour of football fans should not ignore it – if you tell us, we can do something about it.
"Anyone who sees football-related crime or disorder on the rail network can text their concerns to BTP on 61016 or call BTP on 0800 40 50 40."
