A HIT and run driver left a man with a fractured neck and multiple broken bones after a car park row at a Bolton McDonald’s restaurant, a court heard.

A jury at Bolton Crown Court heard how Elliot Barnes fled the scene in a VW Polo after Suhail Mohmed was run over at the Derby Street branch of the fast food restaurant on July 4, 2014.

Sarah Johnston, prosecuting, said an appeal in the Bolton News led to 21-year-old Barnes’ subsequent arrest.

Mr Mohmed, aged 34, was treated in intensive care at the Salford Royal hospital from fractures to his ribs, shoulders, breast bone, pelvis and eye socket as well as a fractured neck and spine. The court heard that he may need surgery on his neck in the future.

Barnes, of Chester Street, Manchester, denies causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The jury heard that, following his arrest, Barnes told police had been taking two girls and a male friend to Bolton for a night out when they stopped at the McDonald’s at 11.40pm to go to the toilet and buy food and drink.

But he claimed that, as they were leaving the restaurant, a group of male Asian teenagers sat at tables became abusive and a row developed with his friend.

He added that as they got into their car to drive away a black Mercedes pulled up and the driver got out and approached his car.

Barnes alleged that the man then opened his door and tried to pull him out of the vehicle.

“I put my foot down on my pedal because I feared for my life,” he told officers.

But he claimed that the man slipped and went under his car as he drove off without stopping.

“There is no way I would get out of my car to risk my life,” he added.

But prosecution witness Zoe Torkington, who had been sitting eating a meal parked in a car nearby, told the jury that the man approaching the car had banged on the window with his palms and had not opened the door.

The trial continues.
