AN ALCOHOLIC punched a woman in the face and threatened to pour boiling water over her son, a court heard.

At Bolton Magistrates Court 30-year-old Tabassam Anwar was given a suspended prison sentence after admitting two counts of assault.

Andrew Hey, prosecuting, told the court how Anwar turned up at the woman's Horwich home on December 30 with a large amount of alcohol which the pair began to drink.

But on New Year's Eve he became aggressive, telling her that he wanted to kill her and her 19 year-old son.

In the kitchen he held up a boiling kettle, asking the teenager "Do you want some burns?" before dribbling water onto the floor.

Later, in the youth's bedroom he grabbed the boy by his neck and then punched the woman in the face.

Rahil Khan, defending, said Anwar, of Park Road, Heaton, is an alcoholic and is remorseful about his behaviour.

Anwar has a lengthy criminal record which, Mr Khan asserted, was mainly due to his problems with alcohol.

"If he can stop drinking he can stop coming before the criminal courts," he said.

Magistrates sentenced Anwar to six weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months and he must spend three months having treatment for alcohol addiction.

In addition he was ordered to undertake 15 days of rehabilitation activity, hand each of his victims £100 compensation and pay £165 in costs and charges.

A restraining order was made banning him from contacting the mother and son for 12 months or going to Stratton Grove, Horwich.
