MYSTERY surrounds the police operation that closed the A666 and saw officers running through a Bolton park.

Officers were seen in The Haulgh area of the town on Friday night into the early hours of Saturday and GMP's Roads Policing Unit shut the A666 to assist colleagues until 12.25am.

The police helicopter was hovering overhead above The Haulgh and Darcy Lever.

But it is still not clear what the incident was all about - and The Bolton News has asked GMP to explain what was going on.

Peter Fairchild, of Hilden Sreet, The Haulgh, said he was woken at 11.30pm by the commotion outside and got up to investigate.

He said: "I saw about 12 officers running with their torches into Bradford Street Park.

"It looked fairly serious. I asked one officer was what going on and he wouldn't tell me but he told me to go back inside for my own safety."
