A MOTORIST caught behind the wheel of a car just weeks after being given a suspended prison sentence for dangerous driving has escaped being sent to jail.

Bolton Crown Court heard how 22-year-old Mohammed Asam was stopped driving a Peugeot 307 on Blackburn Road, Dunscar, on December 12 last year by police who noticed a headlight was not working.

Checks revealed Asam, of Empress Street, Accrington was already banned from holding a licence having been convicted of dangerous driving in October.

The call centre worker claimed to police that the car belonged to his father and he was driving because he had concerns about his two-year-old son's health.

He pleaded guilty to driving whilst disqualified and having no insurance.

Rachel Faux, defending, described Asam as "immature."

"He clearly makes poor choices when presented with alternatives," she added.

The Honorary Recorder of Bolton, Judge Timothy Clayson sentenced Asam to a further two months in jail, suspended for 12 months and banned him from driving for a year. He was also ordered to do 40 hours unpaid work and pay £340 prosecution costs.

"I am prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt this one final time," he told Asam.

"If you are in trouble again in the future your record is going to come back and haunt you."
