A MURDER investigation has been launched following the death of a man at the Royal Bolton Hospital who suffered injuries in an alleged attack.

Police have arrested a 38-year-old woman and a 24-year-old woman on suspicion of murder.

Detective Inspector Paul Rollinson of GMP's Wigan borough said: "The investigation is at a very early stage and our enquiries are ongoing.

"If anybody has any information that they think may assist us, particularly about an altercation on Leigh Road earlier that day, then I would urge them to please come forward."

Officers were called to the hospital at 9.30pm on Sunday by medics after the man died.

He had injuries which were reported to have been sustained during an "altercation" in Leigh Road, Leigh, earlier the same day.

The results of a Home Office post-mortem examination were inconclusive and further tests are currently ongoing to determine whether or not the injuries are linked to his death, which is currently being treated as unexplained.

The arrested pair remain in custody for questioning.
