A man has been charged with murder after a fatal house fire in Clifton.

Alan Maidment, aged 40, of Ludlow Avenue, Salford has been charged with murder and remains in custody.

He has also been charged with robbery, attempting to possess an offensive weapon and two counts of possessing an offensive weapon.

He appeared at Manchester Magistrates’ Court today and will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on April 5.

Emergency services were called to a property on Berry Street in Clifton at 12.35am on Wednesday, March 22, to a report of a fire.

Following a search by firefighters, the body of 47-year-old Thomas Jones was discovered inside the property.

A home office post mortem has now concluded that he died from multiple stab wounds.
